The Delhi Development Authority's (DDA), after many delays, new housing scheme with 12,000 flats on offer was rolled out by Union Minister of Urban Development M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday.

The houses on offer are across four income categories at different places in the Capital.

Potential home buyers can fill in their applications and submit the forms latest by August 11 while the draw of lots will take place in the first week of November.

The scheme has been launched at the time when the Centre's Goods and Services Tax (GST) has been implemented from July 1.

At the function, Naidu used the opportunity to promote GST.

"The new taxation policy will reduce the prices of houses. GST will bring relief to home buyers. Real Estate developers must extend the benefits of GST to buyers," Naidu said while addressing the media.

The flats will be offered on a free-hold basis while the scheme has been linked with the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

"I feel it's a good scheme and people must utilise it. Our vision is to provide affordable housing to people by 2022. Affordable housing is part of the Smart City Mission. Without proper housing, no city can become a smart city," said Naidu. Most of these 12,000 flats are those which were surrendered or returned in the 2014 Housing scheme. While over 11,000 houses are the Janta (EWS category) and LIG flats, 404 are MIG flats and 87 are HIG.

"Most of these flats were surrendered during the 2014 scheme. However, these have all facilities now. Only 300 are new houses which were built in north Delhi's Jahangirpuri area," said JP Agarwal, housing commissioner, DDA.

The flats are scattered across Rohini, Narela, Dwarka, Jasola, Pashchim Vihar, Siraspur and Vasant Kunj, among others.
